Unblocking the Ice

(Stephanie Beliveau, 2010)

During lunch today, I was speaking with the visiting writer, Michael Martone, about the break in story-telling traditions in the U.S. that he suggests happened in 1980 when huge sheets of ice began hurtling down the river behind us, huge thick sheets of ice hurtling over the rocks and breaking up—it is an annual event and no doubt metaphorical in some way or another.

After lunch, visited the studio of the amazing Montreal artist, Stephanie Beliveau. We had a long talk about melancholy and our work.

Kindred spirits all around.
